VARGON ® - A New Rodenticide

VARGON ® is a new rodenticide that is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (Registration #72919-1 ) for use on Richardson’s and Wyoming ground squirrels. VARGON ®, with its unique foaming characteristic’s and application method, is an effective product that will control the unwanted pests. VARGON ® is patented (U.S. Patent Number 6,558,684B. International patents pending.). The intent of this information package is to familiarize the customer with the VARGON™ product. The product is manufactured by Exit Holdings, L.L.C. The aim of the information package is to show the efficacy of the product and the benefits it can bring to burrowing rodent control – specifically the Richardson’s and Wyoming Ground Squirrels.

VARGON ® was developed in response to a severe ground squirrel problem on a private home site surrounded by ranch and farmland. The VARGON ® rodenticide is a liquid concentrate that is diluted with water to create the field solution. The field solution is pumped through an aspirating nozzle to produce

VARGON ® foam. VARGON ® foam is directed down the burrow until it completely fills the ground squirrel burrow and rises to the surface. The product will expand 3 to 4 times as it exits the nozzle to fill the burrows. All the ground squirrels in the burrow are treated. The ground squirrel breathes in the foam and becomes unconscious within 1-2 minutes, and is dead in 3 or less minutes.

There are no hazardous or toxic substances in VARGON® and it is safe to use around schools, parks and golf courses. Predators are not affected by VARGON®. The VARGON® foam biodegrades quickly and has no residual effects. The foam that is produced is contained within the ground squirrel burrow system. The EPA carefully examined VARGON® and concluded that no environmental concerns exist regarding the use of VARGON® when used as directed.

The potential improvement to crop yield, the protection of property and reducing the potential of injury to animals and people, combined with the environmental safety of the product, makes the cost benefit of VARGON® application an ideal solution. Ground squirrels can be controlled by counties/municipalities – in parks, water reservoirs, memorial sites, school grounds and other key areas; farmers – to protect farmland and improve crop yields; ranchers – to protect damage to livestock from burrows and improve forage yields; golf course managers – to reduce damage to greens, fairways and adjacent land; and home owners – to protect property and reduce nuisance.

VARGON® is registered and licensed in the United States, and as EXIT® in Canada.

Efficacy

Independent laboratory tests show that when used as directed, VARGON® is 98-100% effective in controlling Richardson’s and Wyoming ground squirrels. This level of effectiveness is assured when the proper application equipment is used, as described below.

1
Keys to Success

The success of VARGON® depends on:

The proper mixing of the field solution.
The equipment required for application.
The application by an efficient and knowledgeable applicator.
Monitoring the area and re-treating new burrows.

2
Mixing Field Solution

VARGON® liquid concentrate consists of two active ingredients: alpha-olefin sulfonate, sodium and mustard seed powder (Brassica hirta). The VARGON® liquid concentrate is mixed at a ratio of 1 gallon VARGON® to 24 gallons water, to yield 25 gallons of field solution. Refer to the mixing instructions on the label attached to the VARGON® container. The field solution should be prepared just prior to application.

3
Application Process

  • Insure that required licenses and permits are in place prior to application.
  • Survey the pest area to assess the problem.
  • Identify that ground squirrels are entering the burrows. To establish the active ground squirrel burrow you should cover, fill or till all holes the day before application.
  • Check the site prior to application for indications endangered or non-target species.
  • Establish a treatment plan.
  • Mark or flag active ground squirrel burrows for the application process. If any non-target species burrows are identified they should be flagged and DO NOT apply VARGON® to these burrows.
  • Plug the burrow entrances using the perforated VARGON® cones.
  • Prepare VARGON® field solution according to label instructions to ensure that the product is mixed properly. (See label attached to the VARGON® Rodenticide container)
  • Test the application equipment using freshly prepared field solution.
  • Apply the VARGON® field solution.
  • Fill the burrow using the nozzle to apply the VARGON® foam by inserting the nozzle through the first cone until the foam rises back through the holes in the cone indicating the burrow is full of foam.
  • Move on to the next cone and apply foam. Continue.
  • Transfer the cones to the next set of burrows after approximately
3 minutes has passed since beginning to apply VARGON®. DO NOT remove cones if movement is observed underneath cone or in the foam.
  • Cover and refill the completed holes with dirt.
  • Compact fill dirt as needed.
  • Complete field application and monitor over successive days. If reapplication is required repeat the process.

4
Monitoring and Effectiveness

It is important to monitor the effectiveness of the product after the application process to ensure the success of the rodent control. Because of the migration of ground squirrels, especially in spring, there may be reinvasion into the treated area. A second application to control the residual or new pests is usually required. The intent of using VARGON® is not to eradicate the species but rather to control the burrowing rodent problem. VARGON® is a positive control method: animals can be contained within a perimeter or removed from within the perimeter, depending on the control objective. If the rodent problem is not substantially alleviated or you have questions concerning the product or the application method, please contact Exit Holdings L.L.C., and a VARGON® representative will contact you.

All equipment for the safe and efficient application of VARGON® is available from Exit Holdings LLC. The equipment is available as a complete kit or as individual components.
