Frequently Asked Questions

1
What is VARGON®?

VARGON® is a new non-toxic rodenticide recently approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the control of Richardson's Ground Squirrels and Wyoming Ground Squirrels in the United States.

2
How is VARGON® used?
VARGON® is mixed at a ratio of 1 gallon of concentrate to 24 gallons of water to form the "field solution". The field solution is pumped through an aspirating nozzle to produce VARGON® foam. The VARGON® foam is directed into the burrow through a perforated cone and completely fills the ground squirrel burrow. All ground squirrels in the burrow are treated.

3
How does VARGON® work?
VARGON® foam completely fills the ground squirrel burrow. The ground squirrel breathes in the VARGON® foam and becomes unconscious within a few minutes. All ground squirrels in the burrow are asphyxiated soon after they become unconscious.

4
How effective is VARGON®
The testing required during the registration process showed that VARGON® is 95 - 100% effective when applied correctly. Our experience has shown that when active burrows are identified and treated, all of the ground squirrels in the burrows die.

5
Is VARGON® hazardous?
VARGON® is non-toxic and non-hazardous when used as directed. There are no hazardous or toxic substances in VARGON®. The VARGON® foam biodegrades quickly and has no long-term residual effects.

6
How does VARGON® affect the environment?
The majority of the VARGON® foam produced is contained within the ground squirrel burrow system and rapidly biodegrades. Any VARGON® foam on the surface disappears rapidly and biodegrades. The EPA carefully examined VARGON® and concluded that no environmental concerns exist regarding the use of VARGON® when used as directed.

7
Is VARGON® difficult to apply?
The average Richardson's or Wyoming ground squirrel burrows requires 10-20 seconds to treat. It is less labor intensive than trapping or placing baits properly at the opening of every burrow. The most effective way to treat an area is to identify the main colony and treat all active burrows with VARGON®. From the main colony, expand the treatment area outward until the entire area has been treated.

8
Will VARGON® affect other species?
Yes, it may harm other species if they are present in a burrow being treated. Burrows must be inspected prior to treatment to ensure that they are inhabited by only Richardson's ground squirrels and no other species.

9
Is VARGON® safe to use in my yard or around my house?
Yes, it may affect other species if they are present in a burrow being treated. Burrows must be inspected prior to treatment to ensure that only Richardson's ground squirrels and Wyoming ground squirrels and no other species inhabit them.

10
What would happen if my dog or another predator comes in contact with a treated ground squirrel?
VARGON® poses no danger to any predators through secondary poisoning or other harmful effects. All of the treated ground squirrels die in the burrow. If by any chance a ground squirrel escapes, it poses no danger to any predators. There is no secondary poisoning or other harmful effects when using VARGON®.

11
Is VARGON® application equipment available?
Yes. Complete application kits and all the components used in the kit are available from Exit Holdings, L.L.C.

12
How do I clean my VARGON® application equipment?
Simply flush water through the system to clean VARGON® application equipment. The residual water can be disposed of as directed on the label, or may be used to mix with VARGON® to make additional field solution.
